Obtaining a side view of innexin gap junction plaques.

A, a two step process is used to visualise innexin gap junction plaques from the side. Firstly, a large number of closely spaced Z-sections (two dimensional images - showing plaques viewed from above) are obtained across the boundary region between two cells. The data in this 'Z stack' is then processed into a three-dimensional (3D) model. B, by rotating the 3D model one can observe a side view of the cells plasma membrane and the plaques contained in it. Size bar = 2μm. Another 3D-reconstruction from a salivary gland cell pair, showing Inx2-containing plaques, can be seen here .
