A, Overexpression of UAS- inx73U(7X)8 in GAL4 line 69B causes a weak vein-thickening phenotype (asterisks*). B, 69B (Brand and Perrimon, 1993) directed expression of UAS-inx73U(7X)8 in a Notch mutant fly enhances the thick vein phenotype. Veins of N264-39 /+ flies are normally not this thick. C, 69B directed expression of UAS-inx73U(7X)8 in dominant innexin2 mutant flies (with X chromosome genotype Inx2TA181/+) also enhances vein thickening (asterisks*). D, Expression of UAS-FLN ΔBRV (dominant negative Notch) by 69BGAL4 suppresses Notch signaling ( Lawrence et al. 2000). This wing shows the severity of vein phenotype that can be obtained when Notch signaling is strongly suppressed in 69B. There is a large increase in vein tissue at the expense of blade tissue. Obviously, the Notch-like phenotypes induced by innexin-overexpression or modified by the dominant Inx2 mutation are relatively minor compared to this ‘worst-case’ phenotype. All flies grown at 25C.
