Eye phenotype observed during a screen for genetic modifiers of a dominant Inx2 mutant.
Scanning electron micrograph of a whole fly eye (left) and a close-up of individual facets (right) from an animal of genotype Inx2TA181 / + ; Df(2L)BSC7/+. The deletion Df(2L)BSC7 removes a single copy of nrv1 gene and a single copy of the neighbouring nrv2 gene. nrv1 and nrv2 encode alternative Na+ / K+ ATPaseβ subunits. Animals of this genotype exhibit severely disrupted eyes. The phenotype has been confirmed using single mutants of nrv1 and nrv2. Dominant Inx2 alleles were later found to genetically interact with mutants of the gene encoding the Na+ / K+ ATPase α subunit. iob - interommatidial bristles. Om – ommatidia. Black scale bar = 2μm.
